The new trash cart color is dark gray for compliance with State Law Senate Bill (SB) 1383 which establishes unifying cart/bin colors statewide; blue for recycle, green for compost, and gray or black for trash. The intent of the container color requirement is to make it easier for you to recycle and compost right at home, work, and school.
Oakland has until 2036 to get all trash, recycle, and compost containers aligned with the new color requirements. Dark gray trash carts will only be delivered as need to replace damaged burgundy trash containers.
