THANK YOU EARTH DAY VOLUNTEERS
Once again, we outdid ourselves - the numbers and energy of the volunteers was outstanding for Oakland’s 14th Annual Earth Day event with 104 registered project sites. “Clean it. Green it. Mean it.” was definitely the momentum of the day. A record number of 4,464 enthusiastic volunteers brought a sense of ownership, stewardship and pride to their communities. Earth Day still stands as Oakland’s largest community volunteer event.
Volunteers logged an impressive 13,392 volunteer hours in one day! 24 city parks received vegetation removal; more than 20 trees were planted citywide; over 100 shrubs planted, 19 school campus sites were cleaned; 3 libraries abated litter in their surroundings; 12 creek sites received a “crew cut” of non-native species; 43 medians, public spaces were cleaned and greened; 3 CalTrans sites were spruced and 1 butterfly garden planted. Wow! And we all had a great time. Thank you to each and every one of you.
